Born in Oviedo in 1961, Patricia Urquiola is an internationally renowned Spanish architect and designer, celebrated for her creativity and her unique approach to design. She studied at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, then at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where she graduated in 1989 under the guidance of Achille Castiglioni. She later became his assistant in Milan from 1990 to 1992, a period that marked the beginning of her deep immersion into the world of design.
From 1990 to 1996, she contributed to product development at De Padova in collaboration with Vico Magistretti, before joining Lissoni Associati as head of design. In 2001, she opened her own studio, Patricia Urquiola, where she focuses on product design, installations, and interior architecture. Her collaborations with iconic brands such as B&B Italia, Moroso, Alessi, and Cassina—where she has created innovative pieces—have made her a central figure in contemporary design. In 2005, together with Eliana Gerotto, she designed a lighting collection for Foscarini, including the famous Caboche pendant and table lamps, which reinterpret the classic chandelier using modern materials inspired by plastic bracelets from the 1960s.
Beyond furniture, Patricia Urquiola has also distinguished herself in interior architecture, recently designing the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Barcelona. She continues to push the boundaries of design, blending tradition and innovation to create pieces that combine functionality, aesthetics, and cultural sensitivity. Her creations are infused with playfulness and meticulous attention to detail, while highlighting the use of modern and sustainable materials.
