Gerrit Thomas Rietveld


Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888–1964) was a Dutch architect and designer known for his major role in the De Stijl movement, as well as for his innovative approach to furniture design. His works, characterized by strict geometry and bold use of color, greatly influenced modern design. Rietveld aimed to combine functionality, simplicity, and a certain level of abstraction in his creations, while pursuing the idea of accessible and democratic design.


Rietveld is famous for his Red and Blue Chair (1917), an iconic piece of the De Stijl movement. This chair, composed of straight lines and primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), breaks away from conventional forms and embodies the idea of reducing furniture to its most essential elements. He also created the Zig-Zag Chair (1934), whose angular lines and radically simplified wooden structure became a symbol of modernism. This piece explores the relationship between form and function, highlighting simplicity and innovation in the use of materials.


For Cassina, Rietveld designed iconic furniture such as the Red and Blue Chair and the Utrecht armchair (1935). The latter, created as part of a project on urban furniture design, combines comfort and aesthetics in a form more fluid than his earlier works. The Utrecht armchair, minimalist yet deeply ergonomic, remains a standout piece in contemporary interior design. These pieces are still produced today and prized for their functional and avant-garde design.
