Jonathan Muecke approaches both furniture and sculpture with the intention of revealing and expressing the inherent logic of his materials. The Muecke Wood Chair was born from his desire to celebrate all the qualities of wood, including the often-hidden end grain. To achieve this, he shapes the wood into rounded dowels and develops a joinery method that connects them where they intersect, using a floating tenon. “You can understand the piece of wood,” he explains. “It isn’t disguised. It’s there for you to understand again and again.” This approach highlights the natural beauty of the material while revealing a clear and coherent structure. The distinctive joinery system is repeated throughout the entire collection, named the Muecke Wood Collection.
