An icon of Italian design created in 1965 by Gae Aulenti for Martinelli Luce, the Pipistrello takes its name from the bat (“pipistrello” in Italian), whose spread wings inspired its diffuser. The Pipistrello Satin Brass lamp is the original bulb version. Its satin brass structure, with soft and precious reflections, elevates its sculptural silhouette.

Its opal white methacrylate diffuser provides soft, diffused light from four 4 W E14 LED bulbs, included (1,800 lm, 2700 K). Its telescopic stem adjusts the height from 70 to 86 cm, making it suitable as a table lamp or as a floor-standing accent light.

Designed by Gae Aulenti and produced by Martinelli Luce, the Pipistrello Satin Brass is a timeless piece combining heritage and innovation.

Gae AULENTI

Born in Italy in 1927, Gaetana Aulenti (known as Gae Aulenti) graduated in architecture in 1954 from the Milan Polytechnic, where she later taught. She designs furniture and lighting, and is involved in the interior design of numerous hotels and museums, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Centre Georges Pompidou, and in Barcelona, where she refurbished the Palacio Nacional de Montjuic as the Meseo de l'Arte Catalana. An architect of international renown in the 1980s, Gae Aulenti also works as an editor and graphic designer for Casabella Conitunuita and teaches in schools around the world. She exhibited at the Milan Triennale, where she won numerous prizes. Her work is as varied and comprehensive as his personality. She excelled in all aspects of design, and in 1987 was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by François Mitterrand. One of its most famous works is the Pipistrello lamp for Martinelli Luce, considered a design classic, which takes pride of place in many galleries around the world with its particularly original bat-like shape that diffuses a soft, warm light.

Who designed the Pipistrello lamp and what is its story?

The Pipistrello lamp was designed in 1965 by Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti for Martinelli Luce. Its diffuser was made using moulding techniques that were innovative at the time. Its name means “bat” in Italian: the flared base rises and widens into the ribs of the diffuser, like outstretched wings. Still produced by Martinelli Luce, the Pipistrello is one of the most iconic lamps in Italian design.

What are the dimensions of the Pipistrello lamp?

The Pipistrello lamp is 55 cm in diameter and its height adjusts from 70 to 86 cm thanks to its telescopic stem in satin stainless steel. It weighs 8.8 kg in the bulb version and 9.6 kg in the LED version. Its 45 + 200 cm power cable gives great freedom of placement.

Can the Pipistrello lamp be used as a floor lamp?

Yes. Martinelli Luce designed the Pipistrello as both a table lamp and a floor lamp. On a console, sideboard or table, it creates a soft ambient light. Placed on the floor at its highest position (86 cm), it becomes a sculptural accent lamp next to an armchair or sofa.

Pipistrello with bulbs or Pipistrello LED: which version should I choose?

Both versions share exactly the same design. The bulb version uses four E14 G45 4 W LED bulbs, included (4 x 450 lm, i.e. 1,800 lm, 2700 K); it is not dimmable and the bulbs can be replaced. The Pipistrello LED has an integrated 11.8 W LED source (1,796 lm, 2700 K), dimmable via an in-line dimmer on the cord, with a stated lifespan of 50,000 hours and energy class E. The light output is equivalent: choose the LED version if you want to adjust the light intensity.

Which bulb does the Pipistrello lamp use?

The bulb version of the Pipistrello uses four E14 LED bulbs, G45 format, 4 W and 2700 K, supplied with the lamp. The Pipistrello LED has no bulb to change: its light source is integrated and dimmable.

Which finishes and colours are available for the Pipistrello lamp?
