Marc NEWSON

Born in Sydney in 1963, Marc Newson studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts, then travelled in Asia and Europe, experimenting with the creation of designer furniture. He received a grant from the Australian Crafts Council which enabled him to stage his 1st exhibition with the Lockheed Lounge armchair, which has won three world awards in 20 years. He works in Tokyo, Paris and London and has his own agency. Marc Newson is the most famous and influential designer of his generation, working for a number of prestigious brands including Cappellini, for whom he has created a number of astonishing pieces: the Felt Chair, the Embryo Chair and the Wooden Chair. Passionate about technology and new materials, his creations are bold, with generous, organic shapes. Marc Newson also works for a number of companies, including Ford and Dassault Aviation, creating bicycles, cars and yachts, a far cry from contemporary furniture and lighting. His creations are generally considered to be essential works of modern design and are included in the collections of several museums (MoMa, Centre Georges Pompidou, Vitra Design Museum). He has won numerous awards, including the Royal Design for Industry in the UK, and Her Majesty The Queen has awarded him the title of CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire).
