The story of the Elda armchair, currently produced by the Longhi brand, begins in 1963 when Italian designer Joe Colombo visits a shipyard where fibreglass boat hulls are manufactured. The result of this innovative hand-moulding technique is Elda, which went into production from 1965, an armchair with a broad silhouette and avant-garde aesthetic, subtly fusing the modernity of 1950s American and Scandinavian furniture design with the more classic style of the 1930s.
The structure of the Elda armchair, looking futuristic for a 60s/70s observer, features a rotating circular base connected to two petal-shaped fibreglass caps on which hang tubular, removable leather-covered cushions. The comfort provided by the Elda armchair is guaranteed by the height and cocoon formed by its backrest made from a lightweight yet hard-wearing composite material. Initially produced in a white leather finish, Colombo has also designed a model of the armchair in which the cushions are wrapped in black leather.
Exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris, the armchair is a must-have for true design enthusiasts and lovers. Elda contains an aura to which the world of cinema has not remained insensitive, since the chair appears in several successful films and series, where it is specially selected for its powerful, authoritative and elegant character, and because it transmits, for a moment, a little of its prestige to whoever sits in it.
