For the Beetle collection, designers Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi drew inspiration from the beetle, studying the insect’s anatomy, aesthetics, and movement. The secondhand Beetle chair found an audience as soon as it was introduced in 2013 and has since become the biggest commercial success for the Danish brand Gubi. The collection reinterprets the beetle’s characteristic elements, whether in its shape, joints, or its rigid exterior and supple interior. The Beetle chair is a blend of classic Italian design and Scandinavian traditions. The creations of the GamFratesi studio often draw on the legacy of classic Danish design, as well as nature, and more specifically, the world of insects—since the Beetle was inspired by the exoskeleton of beetles. In this version, the Beetle chair is upholstered in luxurious velvet and features elegant, slightly tapered legs made of black epoxy-coated steel or brass. The seat and backrest are crafted from molded plywood, covered in fabric, and padded to ensure optimal comfort. The elegant shape of the Beetle chair is accentuated by leather piping that highlights the contours of the seat and backrest.
The GamFratesi studio was founded in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. GamFratesi is part of the latest generation of furniture designers, and together they represent a new interpretation of Danish and international design. GamFratesi's designs draw their creative impetus from the fusion of tradition and renewal, as well as from an experimental approach to materials and techniques. With their respective cultures, they draw their inspiration from Danish furniture and Scandinavian craft traditions, but also from Italy's timeless conceptual and intellectual approach. Thanks to this multi-cultural partnership, GamFratesi creates furniture pieces that reflect tradition while presenting unique stories, symbols and associations, often expressed in a minimalist style. The GamFratesi duo works with some of the biggest names in design, including Gubi, with the Bat collection and the now famous Beetle chair, Hay, with the Silhouette sofa, and also Minotti, Dedon and Fontana Arte.
