Description
With chair 118, designer Sebastian Herkner pays tribute to Thonet's heritage, taking the codes of chair 214 a step further. In the mid-19th century, Michael Thonet revolutionised the design of the chair by reducing its elements to a minimum. Sebastian Herkner perfects this idea, adding sophisticated details that make the chair less dominant and even more beautiful. The shape of the legs is one such distinctive feature: rounded at the back, their edges are subtly curved at the front, creating lines that reflect the horseshoe shape of the seat. Like chair 214, the seat of chair 118 consists of a bentwood frame with Viennese cane stretched over it. Minimalist and authentic, but also elegant and filigree, Thonet's chair 118 gives a subtle elegance to any dining table, in any restaurant.

Sebastian HERKNER
Born in Germany in 1981, Sebastian Herkner studied Product Design at the University of Arts and Design in Offenbach, graduating in 2007. He founded his own eponymous studio in 2006, also in the same city, specialising in object and furniture design. Following an internship at Stella McCartney during his studies, he developed a real sensitivity to colours, materials and textures. "There is a sensibility and identity to my work that emphasises function, material and detail." Sebastian Herkner also works on interior architecture projects and museum exhibitions. His many collaborations testify to his talent, including ClassiCon with the famous Bell table, Moroso, Pulpo, Cappellini, Gubi, And Tradition, La Chance, Zanotta and Thonet. His curiosity for different cultures is reflected in his creations. He combines traditional craftsmanship with new technologies to achieve a certain balance. Winner of numerous awards, he has been named "Designer of the Year" by the Maison & Objet show in 2019.

THONET
Thonet is today a pioneer in furniture design worldwide. The German furniture manufacturer is a family-owned company with a prestigious history. Shortly after its inception, Thonet became a major furniture maker with a global distribution network, always working with famous designers such as Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, and later Stefan Diez or Naoto Fukasawa. Indeed, the furniture from the Thonet brothers began to have commercial success, particularly thanks to the famous Vienna Café chair Thonet. It was created in 1859 and is considered one of the most successful industrial furniture designs globally.
