Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was an internationally renowned Danish architect and designer, widely recognized for his decisive role in the development of modern design. Although he is best known for his minimalist and functional architecture, Jacobsen also left a lasting mark on the world of industrial design, notably through his iconic furniture creations. He embraced an integrated approach to design, in which every element—whether architectural or furniture—was meant to harmonize in order to create a coherent experience. His style was characterized by clean lines, simple forms, and meticulous attention to detail. A pioneer of the modernist movement, he favored functionality and simplicity while exploring new materials and techniques.

Among his most famous creations are emblematic pieces such as the Egg chair (1958) and the Swan chair (1958), designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. These chairs, with their smooth, enveloping curves, perfectly embody the elegance and ergonomic focus at the heart of Jacobsen’s work. They have become symbols of Danish design and mid-20th-century modernism. His innovative approach to materials and technology, including molded shells, helped redefine 20th-century furniture.

In addition to his furniture designs, Jacobsen also created everyday objects—from lighting to clocks and office accessories—while remaining faithful to his principles of simplicity and functionality. He also made his mark in architecture, with notable buildings such as the Royal Hotel, one of his most famous works, as well as various residential and corporate projects.
