Superstudio

Superstudio is a collective of Italian designers and architects founded in 1966, playing a central role in the radical design and architectural movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Led by architects Adolfo Natalini and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Superstudio is known for its radical critique of consumer society and its avant-garde ideas that challenge the conventions of traditional design and architecture.

The Superstudio collective produced conceptual and theoretical projects rather than concrete realizations. They are particularly known for their utopian projects, which blended design, architecture, and art in a visionary approach. Among their most famous works is Future System, a vision of future architecture, as well as drawings such as The Continuous Monument, which proposed the idea of a continuous utopian city without any breaks or separation between private and public spaces.

Superstudio members also explored the concept of industrial design and furniture through radical pieces that often broke away from traditional functionality. They collaborated with iconic brands such as Florence Knoll and Poltronova, producing furniture that defied classical expectations and that has become recognized today as a hallmark of 20th-century design.

Superstudio’s work is rooted in a quest for a new vision of the world—a reflection on urbanism and society that remains influential in contemporary design. The group paved the way for new forms of design thinking, advocating for a freer, more conceptual, and more critical approach to the discipline.
