Pierre Paulin

Pierre Paulin (1927–2009) was a French designer whose work left a significant mark on the history of modern design. He grew up in a creative environment, influenced by his great-uncle, sculptor Freddy Stoll, and his uncle Georges Paulin, an automotive designer and inventor of the convertible coupé. After studying at the École Camondo, Pierre Paulin began his career in the 1950s and quickly became a key figure in the world of design.

His recognition grew thanks to his innovative creations, notably when he designed the entire furniture set for the official office of French President François Mitterrand. In 1972, he introduced modernity into the Élysée Palace by creating furniture for President Georges Pompidou. His collaboration with the French government continued with the renovation of the dining room for Jacques Chirac, illustrating his talent for combining contemporary design with institutional elegance.

Alongside his public projects, Pierre Paulin co-founded ADSA with two partners and developed industrial projects and visual identities for major companies such as Air France. He also contributed to prestigious interior projects, including the Gare de Lyon in Paris. His creations—combining comfort, fluidity, and modernity—are now exhibited in numerous museums around the world.

Paulin collaborated with renowned design brands, including Magis, for which he created chairs and storage pieces such as the Élysée bookshelf, and Artifort, for which he designed his most iconic pieces, including the Folio armchair and the Tongue sofa. With Gubi, he designed the famous Pacha armchairs and sofas, now considered design classics. His work is defined by a constant exploration of organic and ergonomic forms using innovative materials. Pierre Paulin is regarded as one of the most important designers of his time, and his pieces continue to influence modern design with their timeless aesthetic.
