Mathieu Mategot

Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) was a French-Hungarian designer and interior decorator, one of the major figures of 20th-century design, particularly recognized for his innovations in working with metal. Matégot developed a unique style by using materials such as perforated metal, brass, and copper, which became defining elements of his creations.

His innovative approach made it possible to integrate industrial materials into furniture and interior decoration while emphasizing both functionality and aesthetics. Among his most famous creations is the “honeycomb” technique, a perforated steel process that he introduced into furniture and objects distinguished by their lightness and modernity. This technique allowed him to create complex forms while reducing the weight of his pieces.

Matégot also designed furniture such as tables, shelves, and armchairs with a sculptural approach that reflected his desire to merge art and utilitarian design. Working with renowned French manufacturers, his creations contributed to the rise of French design in the post-war era. Today, his works continue to be appreciated for their originality, refinement, and avant-garde character.
