Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret & Charlotte Perriand

Le Corbusier (1887–1965), Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) and Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) are three iconic figures of the modern movement, celebrated not only for their bold architecture but also for their successful collaboration in furniture design. Their collective work is characterized by a desire to reinvent furniture by integrating it into a broader architectural concept, while striving to improve daily life through clean, functional and innovative forms.

Le Corbusier, a visionary architect, applied his radical approach to space to his furniture creations as well. Pierre Jeanneret, his cousin and long-time collaborator, brought technical expertise and a strong sense of functionality. Charlotte Perriand, an independent designer when she first met them, complemented the duo with her aesthetic research and passion for innovation.

Together, they designed pieces that have become icons of modern design, now produced by the Italian brand Cassina. Among the most famous creations is the LC4 chaise longue, designed by Perriand and Le Corbusier, which reinvented the concept of the armchair by introducing an ergonomic approach to relaxation. The LC2 armchair, often called the “grand confort,” and the LC3 sofa are classics of modern furniture, combining simplicity and comfort.

Their creations are defined by the use of industrial materials such as chrome, tubular steel and leather, as well as geometric lines that integrate perfectly within contemporary architectural spaces. Their work marked a turning point in the history of design, not only through its innovative aesthetics but also through functional considerations and a focus on well-being.

Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand succeeded in redefining the role of furniture within modernity, helping transform the concept of the home into a rational, practical and aesthetically pleasing environment. Their collaboration stands as a model of synergy between architecture and design, profoundly influencing the evolution of modern furniture in the 20th century.
