The T877 coffee table is one of the emblematic projects designed by Pierre Paulin in the late 1960s, created in parallel with the F300 lounge chair. Together, they mark a pivotal moment in Paulin’s career, defined by his exploration of new materials and his deliberate departure from traditional furniture codes. Conceived from the outset as the natural companion to the F300, the T877 shares a sculptural approach to furniture design. Far from being a simple functional surface, the table embodies a formal investigation into fluidity, solid volumes, and continuous lines. With this piece, Paulin extends his reflection on furniture as miniature architecture, where each element is treated as an independent spatial object. The first versions of the T877 were produced in fiberglass or injection-molded polyurethane—then cutting-edge materials that allowed for the creation of complex curves while ensuring a visually and tactilely pleasing finish. This move toward industrial, malleable materials illustrates Paulin’s interest in the possibilities offered by new technologies and his desire to create objects suited to modern lifestyles. Now reissued by GUBI, the T877 recaptures its original spirit through the use of HiREK®, a high-performance polymer made from industrial plastic waste. This material retains the functional properties Paulin sought—lightness, durability, and stability—while addressing contemporary concerns around sustainability and waste reduction. With its compact size, portability, and bold aesthetic, the T877 reflects the shift Paulin was making at the time: a visionary approach to design that broke free from traditional norms while remaining focused on comfort and ease of use. Reintroduced alongside the F300 chair, it highlights the coherence of the series and reaffirms Paulin’s significance in the history of 20th-century furniture design.
