In the mid-1940s, designer
Alexander Girard experimented with a series of abstract sculptures made from glass, foam rubber, corrugated cardboard, driftwood, plywood and solid wood, including a hand-carved bird figure in applewood. These sculptures were published in the July 1945 issue of the American magazine Arts & Architecture. The original wooden bird is now part of the Girard archive at the
Vitra Design Museum. Working closely with the Girard family,
Vitra has brought this figure back to life. The archaic-looking
Girard Bird figure, made from solid maple from France, can be placed on its feet or tail.
Designer Alexander Girard is one of the most important figures in the history of post-war American design. His work focused primarily on textile design, but Girard was also admired for his graphic art and for his work as a furniture designer, set designer and interior designer. Seductive and endearing, the
Girard Bird sculpture is a perfect gift idea for design lovers.
