The Plastic Armchairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s were presented for the first time as part of the 'Low Cost Furniture Design' competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The shell with its organic lines was originally made of fibreglass. Reissued by
Vitra with a polypropylene shell, the
chaise DSX (Dining Height Side Chair X-Base) with its sober aesthetic is defined by a four-legged tubular steel base and an organically shaped shell available in a wide range of colours. The base is available in a chrome-plated or black epoxy finish, which is also suitable for outdoor use. The
chaise DSX is suitable for both domestic and public environments.
By adopting moulded polypropylene, Vitra has improved both its robustness, elasticity and comfort. Starting with a single shell shape, the chair is available in three main families characterised by the shape of the base: the Eames DSR chair with Eiffel base, the Eames DSW chair with wooden lattice base and the Eames DSX chair with simple tubular base. The Eames DSXE chairs are available in several colours, with or without seat cushions or interior padding.
