Designed by Tom Dixon in the early 1990s, the Bird is a rocking chaise longue whose organic silhouette evokes the wings of a bird in full flight. Its generous curves and clean lines make it both an exceptional seat and a true interior sculpture, as striking from a distance as it is comfortable once you settle into it.
Its structure of solid fir, metal and high-density wood panels is covered with multi-density polyurethane foam padding, designed to provide optimal support in a reclined position. The cover, fully removable, is available in fabric or leather depending on the collection. Carefully balanced, the Bird encourages a gentle rocking motion that naturally follows the rhythm of the body.Produced by Cappellini, an Italian house founded in 1946 and a pioneer of international contemporary design, the Bird is part of a collection that has always combined formal rigour with innovation. Available in a wide range of colours, it fits as naturally into a private living room as it does in a reception area or a design hotel. A timeless piece, now out of production, that design enthusiasts eagerly seek out on the secondary market.
Tom Dixon is one of the most innovative designers of his generation, a true avant-gardist. Born in 1959 and of British origin, he spent many years as artistic director at Habitat, before setting up his own publishing house in 2002. His originality made him famous around the world for his futuristic designs, including the iconic S-Chair. Buckingham Palace awarded him the Order of the British Empire for services to design in 2001. Tom Dixon is passionate about working with materials and technical innovations. He loves working with raw materials and modernising and refining them for our interiors. This atypical designer is constantly reinventing himself with designs that are instantly recognisable, both technically and sculpturally. Among the most emblematic are the Beat, Melt, Copper and Void collections of lights, most often made from copper, brass, steel or blown glass. Voted Designer of the Year in 2014 at Maison & Objet in Paris, his work is on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMa in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Tom Dixon brings together collections of furniture, accessories and lighting, and is now represented in 90 countries, with hubs in London, Milan, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Tokyo and New York. In 2013 Tom Dixon also took a step into the world of fashion by collaborating with the famous sportswear brand Adidas.
