Born in 1878 in Enniscorthy, Ireland, Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith (real name) began studying painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1898. In 1902, she took courses in Paris at the Académie Julian and then returned to London to continue her training in lacquer techniques. She moved to Paris permanently in 1907 and left painting to study lacquering techniques, in which she combined luxurious lacquer finishes with Art Deco furniture, moving on to tubular steel furniture from the 1920s onwards. Eileen Gray collaborated with great names in design such as Le Corbusier, taking part in the revolutionary movement that affected design in the 1930s. Later, her taste for architecture was encouraged by Le Corbusier, which led her to design two houses in the Alpes Maritimes. Today, she is one of the architects and designers who have left their mark on the world of design, as demonstrated by her creations that have become classics such as the Adjustable Table E1027 published by Classicon. She has also designed rugs with Art Deco motifs in association with Evelyn Wyld.
