Eileen Gray

Eileen Gray (1878–1976), born in Ireland, is one of the most influential figures in modern design and architecture. After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Académie Julian in Paris, she specialized in furniture design and lacquer work, where she distinguished herself through exceptional technical mastery. Initially influenced by the Art Deco style, she quickly moved toward more modern creations, integrating tubular steel in the 1920s—a turning point that marked her shift toward a more refined, functional and innovative form of design.

Among her iconic creations is the Adjustable Table E1027, published by Classicon, which embodies principles of flexibility and modularity. She is also well known for her lacquered screens, which combine aesthetics with functionality. These pieces demonstrate her constant attention to ergonomics and practicality.

Architecture became another passion for Eileen Gray, notably through her collaborations with Le Corbusier and Jean Badovici. Her most famous architectural project is the Villa E1027, located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera. Designed in the late 1920s, this villa represents a perfect synthesis of modernity and comfort. It stands out for its innovative use of space, its harmonious integration into the landscape, and its functional layout and clean lines. Villa E1027 is considered a major work of modern architecture which, for many years, was overshadowed by Le Corbusier’s work but is now recognized as a masterpiece of the modernist movement.

Eileen Gray is today celebrated as a pioneer of modern design, with her influence still resonating in contemporary architecture and furniture creation. Her work marked a decisive turning point in the history of design and continues to fuel discussions and inspire creators in the fields of furniture and architecture.
