Antonio Citterio

Born in 1950 in Meda, Italy, Antonio Citterio studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he developed a strong theoretical foundation before entering the world of design. In 1972, he began his career as a designer and industrial design consultant, quickly gaining recognition for his innovative approach.

In 1987, he founded the Citterio/Dwan office in collaboration with Terry Dwan, a partnership that lasted until 1996 and marked a period of bold creations and international projects. Alongside his professional practice, Antonio Citterio also distinguished himself through his commitment to design education.

From 1990 to 1992, he was a lecturer at the Domus Academy in Milan, and between 1993 and 1995, he served as an external examiner for the furniture design programs at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1997, he began teaching at La Sapienza University in Rome before joining the University of Italian Switzerland in 1999, where he became a professor of design. In the same year, Citterio founded, together with Patricia Viel, the multidisciplinary design agency Antonio Citterio and Partners in Milan. This agency quickly became a major player in the fields of architecture, industrial design, and urban planning.

Citterio continues to teach, notably at the University of Italian Switzerland, where he has held a chair again since 2006. Throughout his career, Antonio Citterio has received numerous prestigious awards, including recognition from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce in London, underscoring his influence in the world of design.

He is regarded as one of the most iconic Italian designers, known for his ability to create pieces that are both aesthetic and functional, marked by a timeless style. Citterio is a master at combining new materials and cutting-edge technologies to create products that blend beauty, comfort, and performance.

He collaborates primarily with B&B Italia, a leading Italian furniture brand, for which he has designed several iconic pieces. His work with other renowned manufacturers such as Kartell, Vitra, and Flos has also produced notable creations, including the Battista, Flip, and Gastone trolleys for Kartell, the Grand Repos armchair for Vitra, and the Kelvin LED lamp for Flos. These collaborations highlight his influence on the evolution of contemporary design and his ability to remain at the forefront of innovation while preserving an elegant and functional style.
